PAPER CITIZEN
Paper Citizen is a LA-based indie rock project led by Singaporean singer-songwriter, violinist, guitarist and music producer, Claire Gohst. Gohst found her
community in Singapore’s music scene, learning how to play and sing top 40 American songs
to entertain tourists and locals. After half a decade of honing her singing and violin skills in
bars, clubs, and restaurants, Gohst realized she needed to grow in order to develop her
musicality. With the opportunity of a scholarship and the promise of a new beginning, Gohst
moved to Boston to study jazz violin and recording arts at Berklee College of Music. For
Gohst—who lived and breathed American music—studying at Berklee was a dream come true,
and she remembers those times fondly, “through singing, tears and beers.” It was during this
time that Gohst’s love for songwriting, music production, and the expansive palette of the
electric guitar flourished. With influences ranging from spiritual, rock, alternative, and
electronic music, Paper Citizen was born and released its debut EP in 2016, Postcards in
Transit.
In 2019, Gohst moved to Los Angeles and immersed herself in the city’s music and queer
scene, playing dozens of shows across Southern California, while releasing a series of singles
and EP’s. Describing her music as “Indie-rock for a lost soul in a new world,"" Paper Citizen has
garnered critical acclaim from American Songwriter, Guitar Girl Magazine, Vanyaland,
Autostraddle, and Guitar World, who wrote “Claire Gohst delivers a riveting slate of bold,
punchy alt-rock hooks slathered in overdrive, soaring and impassioned singing that tears
through the mix with electrifying aplomb, and even a slither of dreamy, weathered acoustic folk
balladry.
